Fewer registered unemployed
The number of registered unemployed last month stood at 5,861, representing a drop of 476 persons compared to the same month last year, the National Statistics Office (NSO) said. The registered unemployed amounted to 5,194 persons in Malta and 667 in Gozo.
In the 12 months to June this year, Malta experienced a decline in unemployment whereas Gozo saw a marginal rise (-503 in Malta and 27 in Gozo). The change in Gozo resulted from an increase of 37 men and a drop of 10 women on the unemployment register. In Malta, the overall slide came about through 480 men and 23 women fewer on the unemployment register.
All the age groups showed a decline in the number of registered unemployed with the exception of persons aged 45 and over. Both Malta and Gozo reported more registered unemployed in this age group.
Among men, occupations related to elementary duties and plant and machine operations were the most commonly sought while women tended to go for jobs of a clerical or service nature.
The unemployment rate for last month is not yet available, the NSO said.

I don't know why these figures are being released right before the shipyards redundancies are handed out. It seem a bit ironic that they boast lower numbers of unemployed people and only a couple of articles ahead they announce that they are about to unleash over 1,000 unemployed. It seems a little silly actually.
