A 23-year-old Briton was today given an 18-month jail term suspended for two years after he admitted in court to the possession of 20 counterfeit £20 bills.

Jamie Joseph Peter Newland admitted to the charges before Magistrate Silvio Meli.

The prosecuting officer asked the court to retain the bills since counterfeit sterling bills were a rarity in Malta and they would be used for training purposes. He said that the last time fake sterling notes were spotted on the island was about six or seven years ago.
