Twenty years ago we were promised roads that would be up to EU standards. Twenty years have gone by and the roads are still in the same pitiful, disgraceful and bumpy state, minus the very few "highways" and odd side roads here and there. The two major roads leading to Marsascala are a perfect example just to mention one.
There's only one word to describe our roads: rubbish. Any motorist will tell you. Potholes galore, dug up trenches left unfinished for days, if not a week or two.
And now, if that's not enough, "sleeping" policemen are sprouting all over the island. The councils have gone hump mad! Rubber humps and tarmac humps, all shapes, sizes and height are being used, also on an uphill.
And speaking of the tarmac ones, these tend to develop a step and, boy, do they cause a knock! Wherever you go, all you see are sleeping policemen.
Then there are the speed bumps. Who is the wise guy behind these bone shakers? Do the local councils know about the damage these bumps cause to vehicle suspensions?
How much longer must we motorists endure this treatment, another 20 years perhaps?
Recently, The Times carried a letter by a correspondent who calculated that, judging by the time it took to redo lower Rue D'Argens Msida, it should take Malta 130 years (or was it more) to complete the whole Maltese islands. Please don't take that long, I won't be around to enjoy it.
