Opel has said it is committed to improve fuel efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions with a range of engines boasting the Ecoflex and Ecotec systems.

In the Opel model lines, the Ecoflex name is given to each diesel engine variant that boasts the best fuel economy and the lowest emissions. Opel also has the petrol equivalent to Ecoflex, referred to as Ecotec, with equally remarkable fuel saving and reduced emissions.

"Opel engineers have been taking the impact of cars' CO2 emissions on the environment very seriously. This led to very advanced technology to make sure that Opel cars across the board consume and pollute less. This becomes extremely relevant today particularly in view of higher fuel prices and the possibility that cars may be taxed according to their emissions," said Ryan Buttigieg, sales and marketing manager of Opel cars at United Automobile, the local representatives.

"Opel has often been the first automaker to offer technological innovations across many vehicle classes, long before the others followed suit," says Alain Visser, executive director sales, marketing and aftersales, Adam Opel GmbH, and chief marketing officer General Motors Europe.

"Opel was also the first German automaker to introduce the maintenance-free diesel particulate filter as standard in 2005 in many of its models. And Opel is a pioneer and technology trendsetter with natural gas vehicles, which boast especially low emissions and CO2. One can either debate the environment for hours on end - or in good Opel tradition, do something about it."

The Opel Corsa continues to top the charts in environmental credentials. The newly developed 1.2 Twinport engine with 59 kW/80hp premiered in the Corsa is not only more powerful than its 75 hp 1.2-litre predecessor with conventional fuel-injection, it also boasts up to 12 per cent better fuel efficiency.

But the top fuel saver is the Corsa Eco which, with its 44 kW/60 hp 1.0 Twinport Ecotec engine, consumes only 4.6 litres of fuel per 100km (non-urban cycle) making this one of the world's most economical gasoline-powered European compact car in its class.

Until Thursday, United Automobile is offering discounts of up to €2,500 across all the Opel range. As supporters of the 34U campaign, Opel will also plant a tree in the name of every customer who takes a test drive of an Ecoflex diesel or Ecotec petrol Opel until August 31. Test drives may be booked at the United Automobile showroom in Abate Rigord Street, Ta' Xbiex, by calling 2132 0560, or by e-mail info@unitedautomobile.com.mt.
