Two canoeists were rescued by the Armed Forces of Malta this morning after ending up in the water off Filfla.

The AFM's radar and observation post at Delimara Point was alerted at 10.30 a.m. that canoeists were in difficulty between Filfla and a nearby anchored oil rig.

The pleasure craft 'Atlantis' which was nearby, was dispatched by the AFM to render first assistance. An Air Wing Alouette rescue helicopter was scrambled and found an unmanned canoe.

After a brief search the helicopter located a canoeist in the water and winched him onboard. A second canoeist was then spotted and picked up by a patrol boat.

No one was injured.
