I am fed up with Libya and its silly political stances. The representatives of the Libyan people are simply unready to join the international community and contribute any rational dialogue. In last Sunday's edition I read the glaring headline: 'Libya lashes out at the EU's Return Directive', and became really angry.

The Libyan communique expressed ire at what it describes as Africans being treated as criminals. Is it possible that logic is the scarcest commodity in the Libyan political cadre? What do they do to the same Africans? They incarcerate them at best, which is what Europe intends to do. Is not what is good for the goose also good for the gander?

They are simply averse to logic. Libya 'detains' the very people it invited in a moment of probably inebriated euphoria called, I think, the Pan-African Union. Yes, it imprisons the very people it invited. Not just that, but it jails them on the coast, making escape easier.

This raises two considerations. The first is that if these people mange to escape, Libya has failed to contain them, and they should be returned to Libya. It would be bothersome in itself (if our politicians had at least the single little orb required to play table-tennis) to collect these people, feed them, see that they are in good health and return them.

Nobody needs this bother, but at least it corrects Libya's abject 'inability' to guard them. Secondly, one easy way to make sure Libya's neighbours are not bothered by the problem Libya itself created is to locate the detention centres in the extreme south, where these people probably enter Libyan territory; that would make turning them round easier, since Libyan no longer wants them.

Stop them at source, rather than bothering us! If the Libyans claim that the 'immigrants' are not Libyan nationals but people from the horn of Africa using Libya to flee to Europe, we can with a very straight face tell the Libyans that these people from the Horn of Africa are using Malta and its much more limited resources to enter Europe. I hope the Libyan political cadre is not surprised that others are irritated by what irritates it.

Mind you, I'm not taken in by this 'escape' story. Libya is well able to guard its shores against incoming vessels: it is simply inept at guarding the outgoing ones. The Libyans even intervene if there is any drilling for oil in international waters. I hope the Libyan political cadre now realises why I am fed up with the lot of them.

A lot more people should write about. Why the silence? Does their chaotic, selfish and irrational foot-stamping stupefy? It's time to tell the truth about the Emperor's clothes.

Europe treats us like sweepings, giving us a huge rescue zone, and Libya sends its unwanted surplus. We have lovable neighbours, don't we? But people are content to read, and nod, and let others write about a festering and serious problem. I think their silence shall make them reap bitter fruit.

I have purposely avoided going into any sort of humanitarian consideration, because neither Malta nor (much less) I can eradicate the cause of this mass migration phenomenon. I am only concerned with stopping this unsustainable charade.
