Briton Andy Murray ended Novak Djokovic's reign as Toronto Masters champion by beating the world number three 6-3 7-6 to reach the semi-finals.

The eighth-seeded Murray broke the big-hitting Serb at the first opportunity to move into a 3-0 lead and he eased to the opening set.

The players exchanged breaks in the second but Murray dominated the tiebreak, winning it 7-3 to record his first victory in five career matches against the Australian Open champion.

Murray next faces the winner of the quarter-final clash later on Friday between French Open and Wimbledon champion Rafael Nadal and Frenchman Richard Gasquet.

The other semi-final on Saturday pits in-form Frenchman Gilles Simon against German journeyman Nicolas Kiefer, who his chasing his first title since 2000.
