A 64-year-old man from Birżebbuġa sustained serious leg injuries when he was working in a garage which caught fire in Dun Ġorġ Zammit Street at his hometown, yesterday.

The victim, who was hospitalised, was with another man inside the garage when, for some reason, a fire broke out, the police said. The other man was unhurt.

The police are investigating to establish what caused the fire.

The fire, which spread to a row of garages and damaged several cars and electricity cables, was controlled by personnel from the Civil Protection Department. Enemalta workers were called to remove any danger from the burnt electricity cables. Magistrate Doreen Clarke is holding an inquiry. In another incident, the driver of a Fiat Uno escaped unhurt when she managed to get out of the car which caught fire near Stella Maris church in Sliema.

The elderly woman scrambled out of the car when she noticed smoke coming out from under the bonnet. The façade of a residence nearby was damaged by the blaze.
