Beyond political gestures and Labour

I read what Charles Mangion had to say regarding gestures in politics with a smile. The Malta Labour Party wants the whole world to know that they have discovered democracy. It may come as a surprise to them to learn that the concept has been around for more than 1,000 years.

Whereas the strategy behind this sudden love for democracy by the MLP is easy to make out; it being part of the strategy of image building of their new leader, the choice of topics to comment upon is not.

Broadcasting, discrimination and the EU are areas where the recent past history of the MLP is one to be ashamed of. Could this also be a strategy of re-writing history? A strategy also indulged in with some gusto by Communist regimes of the past. We had some recent articles by MLP exponents trying to do just that.

What I found particularly side splitting, especially coming from an "old timer" like Dr Mangion, was his query regarding the government's passion for promoting democratic values, especially that part where he is questioning whether the government's passion would match that "passionate desire" of the MLP.

It may also come as a surprise to Dr Mangion to know some of us have memories and have lived during the period where we experienced the "passionate desire" of the MLP to promote democratic values. Inspite of the recent "love ins", it will take more than mere words to convince that the MLP has changed its spots.
