The fashion industry is shockingly bad at providing fashion in bigger sizes, But the curvy customer is, in fact, the average woman. While much of the high street is busy catering for Kate Moss-sized frames, in this country around 50 per cent of us are size 14 or above.

But the industry is gradually recognising the need for curve appeal. Designers at certain labels are available in sizes up to 22, and high-street store Evans is red hot at translating catwalk trends to plus-size chic.

A trendy new wardrobe is a foolproof confidence-booster if you're lacking confidence in your shape.

Summertime dressing

If you're a fuller-figured woman, rest assured you won't be the only one flaunting your flesh on the beach this summer. So when the sun is shining, proudly bare some skin and soak up those rays.

"Don't hide those curves!" says Anna Scholz, one of the leading designers of the plus-size market who's introduced sexier fashion-conscious clothes.

"Don't be embarrassed by your shape - make the most of it this summer," she advises.

"Just because a woman is bigger it doesn't mean she doesn't have great boobs or great legs."

Curvy girls should do anything but cover up, so embrace your best bits and ditch the black this summer. Anna offers her top ten seasonal tips for fuller figure dressing.

Curvy girl rules

• Don't be afraid to wear pale or bright colours - you definitely don't have to live in black.

• The boho look is great for the curvier lady, as long skirts are in fashion rather than just being a cover-up.

• If you have a generous bust, don't be afraid to show it off. If you're trying to minimise your bust, stick to square necklines.

• If you wear something that tents down from the bust you will make yourself look much bigger than you are. By slinging a belt around your waist or hips, you give the illusion of an hourglass figure.

• Cover larger upper arms with a pretty shrug or bolero top.

• Don't be afraid to show off those legs! It's not just the size 10s who have the best pins. Try wearing your hemline on or just above the knee.

• High heels or wedges can lengthen the legs, so don't just wear flats!

• If you're heading for the beach invest in a kaftan. You won't feel too covered up and it covers a multitude of flaws.

• Ditch the hold-in knickers. Instead invest in some good flesh-coloured underwear which is much more comfortable in the summer heat.

Q&A

I'm heading on holidays and want a sun hat. What style should I go for?

Every suitcase needs a hat this summer and straw or raffia hats are this season's hottest style. But the shape depends on your destination. Beach-bound babes should go for wide-brimmed straw hats for a relaxed vibe, but if you're heading on a chic city break work this season's super-cool straw trilby.
