Appreciation - Mgr Mathew Chircop

As a person who has been helping at the Missions Office in Valletta for the past 20 years, I had the great privilege to work with Mgr Mathew Chircop who left us to meet the Lord last Tuesday.

Mgr Chircop was very dedicated to the mission of the Church and he worked very hard for the Pontifical Mission Societies, of which he was national director for 10 years.

He had a very positive personality and made himself available to everyone but most of all he worked very hard to improve the operations of the Missions Office.

Through his contacts, he managed to find more students from various seminaries in India and Africa who were helped through the generosity of the Maltese benefactors in their studies to become priests. He was also instrumental when the Voluntary Lay Missionaries was founded. Thanks to this initiative many Maltese lay persons were given the opportunity to go on long-term volunteer experiences in mission countries. His love for the missions was also expressed through his continuous dedication even after his term as national director was over, when he worked hard for another 10 years.

Mgr Chircop's humble life will always be a great example to all. He was a holy priest and one could experience his goodness through his spiritual guidance that touched so many lives.

Mgr Chircop, we are very grateful for all the hard work you have done during your time at the Missions Office. We thank you for touching our lives, for making us happy and for giving us the courage to continue to work for the Pontifical Mission Societies.
