Drivers lose ADT tag after violent incidents

The tag of two bus drivers who this morning were found guilty by the Magistrates’ Court of committing a crime during last week public transport industrial action is being withdrawn with immediate effect, the Transport Authority said.

Both drivers received a suspended jail sentence and were fined €1,165 each for incidents outside Castille.(see separate story in the news section)

"The decision by the Malta Transport Authority to withdraw their tag – without which they cannot drive public transport motor vehicles – was taken in accordance with regulation 131 (5) of the Motor Vehicles Regulations (LN 128 of 1994) which gives the Authority the power 'o withdraw a tag where the holder no longer satisfies the good repute requirement'. The good repute requirement is lost if the holder of the tag is convicted of a crime liable to a term of imprisonment of three months or more or a fine of at least €465.87," the ADT explained.

Although the two drivers received jail sentences of less than three months, the fine which they received exceeds €465.87.

"It is normal practice that where public transport drivers lose their good repute requirement, their tag is immediately withdrawn," the authority said.

I have now lived in Malta for three years, and I have not yet changed my mind with regards to the bus drivers. They are extremely rude and give the Maltese a very bad reputation. The Maltese working in restaurants and buses are the people tourists meet, so it is very important that they behave. The two bus drivers who lost their ADT tags should never be allowed to work as bus drivers again because believe me, they won't change their behaviour or attitude. If some of the worst behaved are removed, the general public will recognize and appreciate it, which in turn will help the few good and friendly bus drivers.

I personally used the bus service a lot, but a year ago I bought a scooter because I refused to be treated badly and insulted by these unshaven, smelly and fat rogues. I have even ordered a car which is ready for delivery in November. More cars is the least Malta needs, but I simply won't accept being treated like dirt.

@ Rachel Attard
I fully support your statement. Recently I have been fined excessively for 'overspeeding' by a couple of kms an hour under the St Julian's tunnel. I'm biding time before I pay the fine because I am waiting to see how the situation vis-a-vis the offending drivers is going to develop. Will the liberalisation 'negotiations' include an across the board pardon for those who broke the law? If yes I fell I have the right to object paying up because we are ALL living in the same country and bound by the same laws. Or is it that some still think that 'might is right'?

Let's hope that there will be no pardons

I think that folks should try some of the bus services in other countries including England, they may then appreciate the reliability of the Malta system. It is simple and effective.

Well done. That's great. Just think if the proper arrests were made. There would be about a hundred drivers losing their license. That would have weaved all the wanna be thugs.
Good job Austin Gatt.

Well there are many valid bus drivers some are even exemplary. I think a better wage packet would attract better ones. It is not fair to generalize unfortunately the strike called by Mr Spiteri was the last nail in their coffin. I use the public transport everyday and mismanagement is the order of the day. the so called inspectors are just an extension of the drivers the service would do without them they are useless and some are rude. Dr Gatt you have the backing of almost the whole population including mine the system requires immediate action otherwise time will be on their side. Just grab the momentum and act rapidly you have got the guts unlike others that just sit on the fence.

WELL DONE to who's idea was. BUT I hope and others are hoping

that all drivers including those of the Taxis and the Mini Busses

who are found guilty will have their licenses withdrawn.

At least a satisfaction for the efforts made by the Police.

Very Pleased well done we need to see more drivers sacked. Maybe one day they will learn to act in a civilised manner.

Ann Gatt (on 25/7/08)
I believe that all the drivers involved in the disruption to transport in Malta during the so called stike shoud have their licence taken away. That is the only way we can de assured of roper service in our transport
S. Caruana (on 25/7/08)
Well deserved! Hopefully a step forward to educating Malta's bus drivers. One day in the (hopefully) near future we Maltese will find no reason to envy other European public transport services.

Oh to be in Malta now to savour the friendliness of the Maltese nation.

Good! Some little good news!

Why are the courts being so lenient??
Anne Marie Kissaun (on 25/7/08)
Well Done. I could not believe my eyes when I read the article. I had to read this twice. If only it was the whole fleet. I hope that this will be a lesson for the rest of them. May discipline reign. It is a pity that liberalisation can not be sorted out sooner rather than later as I can not wait for the day when I board a bus and I utter (Bonju/Good morning) to the driver I get a polite response. I hope that this stand will be taken in any other situation that may arise in the future.

@ Steven Grech
Two tags have just become vacant, I suggest you apply, you seem to have the right curriculum vitae.
Joseph Agius (on 25/7/08)
Well done ADT! we are not used with authorities with ....well em guts!
Steven Grech (on 25/7/08)
Fantastic news! Hopefully one day in the not so distant future, Malta will have educated and polite bus drivers whose vocabulary stretches further than "MOVE BACK!"
francois Spiteri (on 25/7/08)
Well done! But shouldn't the legal notice be ammended to also include a conditional discharged?
Martin Büttner (on 25/7/08)
Well Done !!!
