The captain was right
Sorry Joe Izzo, but in your letter of July 22, you got it all wrong and the captain was completely right.
As the Celebrity Century is registered in Valletta it does not have to show a "courtesy flag" of Malta when coming into Valletta Harbour, its home port. However, never the Maltese maritime flag but the Maltese national flag.
Secondly, the red/white flag sported on the mast meant only "Pilot on board" and has nothing to do with our national flag.

Incidentally, this brings out one of the reasons why the Maltese authorities rightly thought of retaining the Maltese Cross on our flag when the Independence (and, later the Republic) constitution was drafted. A white/red flag for Malta, without the cross, would have meant, as rightly quoted, 'pilot on board' every time it was flown from anywhere! The confusion in Mr Izzo's letter brings this out clearly.

A few enquiries or a little research before putting pen to paper would certainly avoid embarassment, wouldn't it?
