Two boys, aged 15 and 12, are in a critical condition after the Hyundai car they were in was involved in a collision with a cement bowser at Cospicua, the police said yesterday.
The driver of the car, who is English, was slightly injured. One of the boys is his son and the other is Maltese, the police said.
The truck driver, who is 40 and hails from Qormi, was suffering from shock. The accident occurred in Triq it-Tlett Ibliet at the end of the tunnel leading from Għajn Dwieli to Cospicua just before 11 a.m.
For some reason the truck and the car collided, with part of the car ending under the truck.
Civil Protection Department personnel freed the injured boys from the wrecked car. An ambulance rushed them to hospital where they were found to have sustained life-threatening injuries.
Duty Magistrate Tonio Micallef Trigona launched an inquiry.
The police are investigating.

A boy of 15 is not a child and cannot be made to sit in the back seat if the front passenger seat is otherwise unoccupied. As for wearing seat-belts - it would have made no difference in this kind of accident.

Were tthe children on the back seat wearing seat belts? Does the law in Malta require back seat passengers to wear seat belts? Would you put your best porcelain china on the back seat without taking sufficient measures to protect it? Why then a child, or anyone else for that matter, without the protection of a seat belt?
