Top Indian artistes for dance and music festival at St James
Indian High Commissioner Murugesan Manimekalai said that two of India's top artistes, violinist Anupriya Deotale and dancer Vyjayanthi Kashi, will perform at St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity, in Valletta this weekend as part of the Festival of Indian Dance and Music.
The festival is one of many events being held this year as part of the European Year for Intercultural Dialogue.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Louis Galea, thanked the Indian High Commission, St James Cavalier Centre and the Consul of India in Malta for co-ordinating the event.
Dr Galea emphasised the importance of understanding other cultures stating that "dialogue is our most effective tool to foster peace, security and prosperity" and that it is "extremely important to be aware of and embrace diversity".
Ms Manimekalai said she was proud to be introducing the traditional dance and music of her country to Malta, claiming that intercultural dialogue "is more important than ever, today".
Michael Fenech, chairman of St James Cavalier, and Wilfred Kenely, Malta's High Commissioner to India, were present at the festival launch.
Backed by a dance and music troupe, Anupriya Deotale and Vyjayanthi Kashi are renowned both in their native India and all over the world. They have performed at venues across the globe, winning national and international accolades. Inspired by traditional Indian rhythms, note sequences and movements, their repertoire at the festival promises to represent the rich diversity of Indian culture. Places at the Festival of Indian Dance and Music are limited. The show will run from Saturday to Monday. Vyjayanthi Kashi will be performing with musicians and a singer at the St James theatre while Anupriya Deotale will be performing in the music room.
