Gender stereotypes in SMEs

The European Commission has just launched a new initiative to help private companies, particularly SMEs, understand how combating gender stereotypes in the workplace increases productivity.

Gender stereotypes have a significant impact on the labour market and the business sector.

Although companies cannot afford to waste talent, stereotypes often act as barriers. The Commission said that 59 per cent of new university graduates and about 80 per cent of students in business administration in Europe are women, who are in charge of over 70 per cent of purchasing decisions.

Firms with the best record of promoting women to high positions are up to 69 per cent more profitable than the average Fortune 500 firms in their sector.

In Malta, 56.3 per cent of women obtain post-secondary school education but this is not mirrored in their overall participation in the economic activity, which stands at 37.5 per cent.

To address these issues, the project will include a series of workshops that will be held in 15 European states including Malta, targeting workers at chambers of commerce, business and professional associations, training bodies, SME managers, human resource managers, businessmen and women and organisations that work with SMEs.

Workshops will be held at the Radisson SAS St George's Bay, St Julians between tomorrow and Friday. Participation is free of charge but places are limited.
