The faster it goes...
Gary Curmi has just posted another world record with his Toyota Supra-powered dragster during an event held by the Malta Drag Racing Association (MDRA) at the Ħal-Far raceway. Clocking the quarter-mile at 7.44 seconds at 174 mph last year, Mr Curmi made a name for himself for the first time as a world record holder. After some tune-ups and a more powerful engine managing set-up, Mr Curmi broke his personal best and registered the record again with a spectacular 7.3 seconds at a 185 mph run.

Mr Oatmon, the record is classified as a world record for Toyota 7M engines.
Taking a small quote from your post.... YES, it's a 'Malta only' as no one made it, not even by HKS in the US.
Well done also goes to Joseph Tabone and Mike Charalambous.

Mr. Oatmon the record was set by Gary in his Toyota Supra 7MGTE-powered dragster and is a world record best for any car powered by such an engine. So no it is not a 'Malta only' record nor is it just hype.

How can this be a world record?
Dragsters reularly run the 1/4 mile in under 5 seconds, both in the Uk and USA.
Is this a 'Matla only' world record or just hype!
