The discussion on divorce
Prime Minister Lawrence`s Gonzi promised divorce discussion in the light of Minister John Dalli`s contention that this obvious right of each married couple should finally be discussed at Cabinet level naturally cannot be taken seriously.
The people smile at such suggestion as we all know that this is Hypocrisy Land where you can do what you please, have as many adulterous relationships as you deem fit, be unfaithful to yours faithfully, cohabitate as you please, register with impunity father-unknown children, distribute generously state benefits at the expense of the honest tax-payer to single mothers, some of whom obtain even additional assistance for imaginary disabilities both for themselves and the forlorn minors to the tune of several hundred euros per month, obtain Housing Authority accommodation as an emergency residence while you still have your ordinary residence and all this plus more under the banner of strengthening family values as Dr Gonzi so often loves to reverberate on!
All the world has an a priori acceptance that divorce is a consequential corollary of entering into a marriage: everyone has a right to marry and as a consequence each of those everyone has a right to divorce. All the world, that is (forget The Philippines with its over 7,000 islands, which have different legal regimes) except tiny, insular and inconspicuous Malta, whose Prime Minister openly shares O Sole Mio with leaders who not only take divorce for granted but are divorcees themselves. So how can the citizens of our country come to terms with this double-faced presentation of the Jekyll & Hyde complex permeating our constitutionally Catholic country when, in reality, Catholic teachings are a far cry from the daily lives most of us lead?
In pure parlance, this is no more than political humbug inviting our people to do more and worse of the same, naturally in the name of family values.
O Sole Mio...

@Maria Zammit
I think you are the one that lives in fairyland. Some marriages tend to turn into a marriage from hell for a multitude of reasons including violence, abuse and infedility. Your idea to force people to live in these marriages just proves how cluckoo your reasoning is. I am sure the grand Inquisitor would be proud of you.
Right now the problems we have are because people who separate do not have any legal option. The disaster you foolishly predict is already in Malta and wonder of wonders we have no divorce yet. If Maltese families are weak it is not because of divorce ...because divorce does not exist yet.
What people like you fail miserably to understand is that people who want divorce are those who still believe in marriage not the other way around. If someone has no option but to leave a marriage a simple legal separation is sufficient. So please refrain from speaking about a marriage situation you have no idea about!! I do and I am happily married second time around.
As for divorce, it is a right that the entire world recognises ....except the Philippines and a few
Maltese.

Mr Grech, are you insinuating that ALL those who voted for PN and MLP are against the introduction of divorce?
Ms Zammit, there just has to be a way out of a bad marriage. Separation is insufficient.

Dear Emmy,
Divorce is not the solution to a bad marriage. The solution lies in one's attitude to marriage. Why do some sign a contract knowing already that they intend not to honour it. With divorce more social problems. When you propose divorce please present the whole scenario, problems and solutions. Don't propose another problem.
I myself would propose penalties for those who break contracts. But I admit my view is quiet unique, for I take responsibility for my wrongs not try to find ways of shirking responsibility and turning for solutions to the government. Unfortunately people today, do not want to take any responsibility for anything. They seek not solutions but because they live an addictive vicious circle, they end up multiplying their problems not only for themselves but for the whole of society. The blame the government. Let's grow up. We're not kids anymore.
And please don't talk about rights. I'm fed up of hearing a broken record. Look before you leap as then it's far too late to cry over spilt milk. Everyone wants a second chance in fairyland. So choose well if you choose at all. Today's kids are more grown up then their parents!

AND, Mr Grech, for many thousands who voted for the other parties, regardless of which part of the political spectrum they belong to.
Just look around you, sir, and open your eyes and ears so that you will be aware of the real situation that is extant on this island that is full of sanctimonious people who have an 'I'm all right, Jack' attitude to the sufferings of other people who are less fortunate.
One might not agree with Dr Bezzina on a host of matters; on this one, however, rest assured that many thousands are in agreement!
