I refer to the report Former Inspector Charged With Taking Bribes (June 14). I would like to add the following for the benefit of readers.

In 2003, when I was mayor of Mosta, Koperattiva Indafa Pubblika (KIP) provided two services to the Mosta local council, namely street sweeping and household refuse collection. It was the duty of one of the council's employees to oversee that the KIP workers did their daily work properly and to the satisfaction of the council and residents.

Around May 2003 I was informed that some KIP officials were allegedly bribing the above-mentioned council employee so that he would turn a blind eye and leave the KIP workers without proper and due supervision.

I immediately wrote to Minister Tonio Borg, the Director of the Local Councils and to the police giving them all the information passed to me. I asked them that, once the necessary investigations were completed, the necessary steps were to be taken according to law.

Recently, the case involving three KIP committee members was closed. Two were found guilty and given suspended sentences and the other member was acquitted of all charges. The case against the former local council's employee who was responsible for overseeing the work done by the KIP workmen has now begun.
