The Somali fisherman Abdulrahman Abdala Gedi, who died in the Simshar fishing tragedy, had seen his father killed, in 2002, before he escaped from Somalia to Kenya along with his mother and three siblings.

There his life appeared to take a turn for the better and he married Layla, but after being imprisoned for six months, he left and came to Malta in June 2007.

Mgr Philip Calleja, director of the Emigrants Commission, said the commission had been in touch with Mr Gedi's family since Saturday morning. Arrangements have been made for him to be buried in Malta.

Mr Gedi was in his early twenties.

Mgr Calleja expressed the commission's condolences upon his death and that of Karmenu Bugeja and Noel Carabott.
