The strike by transport operators and its negative effects on the economy (6)

I could not believe my ears when I heard on the news that the (transport) emergency service that had to be stopped because of intimidation was being carried out by the armed forces. Are not soldiers supposed to be trained to protect our country and, yet, they had to give in to some thugs. Next time try the boy scouts, they might be better.

Nobody in his right sense would want to see the Malta Police or the Army battling against their own fellow Maltese, on Maltese soil! Surely, nobody wishes that.

However, one MUST accept the fact that during these past four days, there WAS chaos in the country; there was ANARCHY and violence took place. Nobody can disput that.

So, should we have allowed that violence to continue, for the sake of keeping the peace, or keeping things within perspective? This is like having two sons fighting at home - one of whom is more powerful and prone to violence; so, their parents accept a certain degree of misbehaviour from their powerful son so as not to ruffle him and provoke him. Is that justice????? Is that how the State protects the victims, the innocent, the ordinary citizens?

I think not.

Whatever what Mark A. Mallia says. The Police and the Army, while having an unenvious job, could have been more active as soon as the 'strike', with all its violence, started.

I agree with Mark Mallia. What did Edwin Cilia expect the soldiers to do? Shoot and kill? The police and the soldiers did a magnificent job in handling the unruly situation and their self control helped bring this whole ordeal to an end.

Dear Edwin,

I can assure you that the AFM was not intimidated, it was just a political move so to not escalate the current situation.

It would be best for everyone to refrain from such comments and instead praise the difficult task our Police and Armed Forces conducted these past days.
