Champions Manchester United, whose wingers and midfielders find the opponents' net as often as their team-mates in attack and, perhaps, even more (as happened last season with Cristiano Ronaldo) retained the title as the best attacking side in the Premiership and Football League.
Since the start of the FA Premiership in 1992-93 this is the seventh time that Manchester United topped the best goal-scorers chart, having dominated in four straight seasons from 1997-98 to 2000-01. This year it was their turn again with an average of 2.11 goals per match.
In the top flight, the scoring total of 1,002 is 71 up on the previous campaign. From the remaining divisions only League Two showed an increase and the total score aggregate of 5,158 is 30 goals above the preceding season.
Clubs in the Premiership that showed an increase on their 2006/07 total were Arsenal, Aston Villa, Liverpool, Tottenham, Chelsea, Everton, Portsmouth, Manchester City, Newcastle and West Ham. The biggest improvement was that of Aston Villa, 19 more nettings on the previous season. The other sides to go into a plus of double figures are the Gunners, the Reds and the Citizens.
The total of 5,158 goals in digits by the end of season 2007-08 reads:
Premiership: 1,002 - an average of 2.64 goals per match (previous season: 931 - average 2.45).
