Part of St Paul's Bay bypass closed by works - ADT protests

The Malta Transport Authority will be applying financial penalties for misconduct after the contractor carrying out construction works on the St Paul's Bay bypass closed the southbound carriageway without its approval.

In view of the closure, traffic from Xemxija towards Burmarrad is being diverted through Triq Ghajn Tuffieha, Triq Sir Temi Zammit, Mgarr, Triq il-Mosta onto San Pawl tal-Qlejja Roundabout, Mosta. The Northbound carriageway will remain open to vehicular traffic (Burmarrad to Xemxija) for the duration of the works.

The ADT said the contractor had been asked to immediately submit a detailed traffic management plan for its approval and failure to submit such would leave the authority with no option but to take further action as necessary. Additionally, the authority asked the contractor to draw up a detailed programme of events and milestones to be tackled daily until the completion of the works.

It is refreshening to see ADT make a comment ... the same closure was put in place without any valid reason for two monhths over the past Christmas period. Perhaps the citizen counts after all ... eight years on from the collapse of this stretch of road. Shame on the authorities for having taken all this time to reopen this major artery to full capacity. No surprise that we have the impression that they are totally shameless!

I think we should give another task to Austin Gatt. Take care of these contructors who think they can do whatever they want in this country. There is no place for bullies anymore, we're fed up

Go for it Austin!!!

Even better question: HOW LONG WILL THE BY-PASS REMAIN CLOSED??????
It's unbelievable!! We're in the peak of the tourist season and we allow certain 'contractors' to work on arterial roads such as this one just because they happen to fancy doing so right now!!!!! The BY-PASS saga continues..........at our expense, obviously - be it financial and/or moral!!

ADT should ask for both from the contractor - immaterial who he is - opening the carriageway immediately and pay the penalty later.

Question : who is "THE" contractor ?
Herman Mizzi (on 17/7/08)
instead of applying financial penalties the ADT should make the contractor open the illegally closed carraigeway immediately. The financial burden on the contractor and the financial gain for the ADT will not alleviate the citizens' hardship especially in the summer months when this stretch of road is most used. Diverting traffic through Mgarr and Mosta is no joke.

This carriage way was also closed yesterday at around 3pm. I was driving in that direction when suddenly and without any warning I found the road blocked!!!

On top of the strike chaos, this was quite frankly the last straw!

Is this a banana republic or what?
