Msida feast: Roads to hospital to stay open
The Police Commissioner has turned down a request to close a section of the Regional Road for the firing of fireworks during the feast of St Joseph in Msida this weekend.
The decision, reversing a trend of the past 10 years, was taken following an appeal by the Superintendent of Mater Dei Hospital for access roads to the hospital not to be closed.
The superintendent’s appeal had drawn an angry reaction from the president of the Ghaqda Melita Banda San Guzepp, Vince Azzopardi, leading the College of Parish Priests to express concern over any risks which may be caused to the sick and any inconvenience which can be caused to people visiting Mater Dei Hospital should the approach roads be closed.
It is not known if any fireworks will now be let off for the feast, and from where.

Let's just hope that the same would apply to Santa Venera, it is a real frustration to have to divert one's trip simply because some people enjoy causeing noise.

I cannot believe it....common sense has prevailed over letting off fireworks in Malta. This must be the start to a new era, where this country is not ruled by village feasts and the constant letting off of fireworks. By the way, is there some sort of law which states at what time these 'wonderful sounds' should stop? Trying to get a baby to sleep is absolutely impossible since fireworks seem be let off EVERY SINGLE DAY and not just at the weekend.

To the leader of the band club who protested rudely in the public media about the closing of the road. NOW RESIGN ! or else change the statue of the club from Band club to tal-hamiem club!

Well done - common sense prevailed. As shown in the bus strike fracas, the country shall not be held at ransom by a couple of puerile individuals.

Sanity is prevailing. Now the next step, for the police commissioner, is to start curbing the outrageous daily and nightly bombings.

Wow, the government stands up to the bus drivers and the police stand up to the Msida band club, and all in the same week. Cant remember the last time the rights of the majority triumphed over the petulant greed of the minority.

At last ,this is the most sensible thing to do.... not sure why it took the authorities so long to make their decision public.
It would be interesting to know from where will the fireworks be let off now !

My appreciation to the Commissioner of Police for taking
the decision to keep one of our arterial roads open.
During the past days several roads were blocked by
the transport workers. So, it doesn't make sense to close
the only road leading to our main hospital. Well done.
My special thanks to Dr. Frank Bartolo - Superintendent of Mater
Dei Hospital - for bringing to light this very delicate situation.

Last Sunday the road was open and petards were being fired from the usual place anyway with traffic passing underneath. All it takes is for one dud petrad to fall on a car carrrying a family. Is this what will happen this coming Sunday?

The Police Commissioner should never have granted a permission long ago. Arterial roads have to stay open.

Thanks for the Police Commissioner and Health Superintendent for starting all this. One last thing is Vince Azzopardi going to stay with what he said. Over my dead body. Come on be a gentleman. Respect is the word, and wishing a good feast to Msida citizens

If I recall correctly, the President of a Band Club in Msida was quoted as saying that the road will only remain open 'over my dead body'. I presume that he will resign immediately. I'm not holding my breath though.

A well taken decision......i think nowhere in the world anyone closes a traffic artery just to let off some fireworks.

Could'nt an alternative road be found? Dont we have any more respect to our traditions anymore? I guess this will have the same ending as the ringing of the bells.. Addio to the maltese culture!

Congratulations to the Police Commissioner for a wise and sane decision. At last it is to be seen that some sanity exists in this country in the midst of the insanity that has pock-marked this current week. The people of this country have yet to learn properly that the national interest should ALWAYS prevail over individual or parochial interest and not vice versa. We should instil a new subject in our educational curriculum - how to stiffle individual ego in the greater interests and for the benefit of our fellow human beings.

Well done to the authorities for taking this stand! Maybe the rights of the majority of citizens are being heard at last.
What baffles me is 'why did the police commissioner take so long to decide?'
The answer to close an arterial road should always be a big NO!!

Where was the Police Commish when the Transport Workers closed the whole country. This a tough call . You guys want to use Gzira for your fireworks. Viva Ta'l KARMNU. You think ST Joseph would approve.I hope you guys find another location. The feast wouldn't be as fun. Good Luck neighbors, and have a safe feast.

Well done to Commissioner John Rizzo for turning down the request to close the Regional Road during the Msida feast. It was in the interest of all the Maltese citizens as well as tourists. I only hope that we don't have to drive over Vince Azzopardi's dead body on the way!

You see Mr. Azzopardi it’s done without going over your dead body, a loss to the liberated hearse corporation. Now be nice to St. Joseph you hear. Thanks to the thoughtfulness of the hospital superintendant. Happy feast to you and all Msidians.

Nice one Police Commissioner.
About time we start getting serious with these sorts, but I hope Government doesn't now decide to subsidise Msida Band Club with some 230,000 euro too.

Common Sense - LOGIC has finally prevailed. Feasts are a fanatical local affair and should be limited to and around the Church parvis.Malta does not have the time and space to keep wasting so much time just to please a few hotheads who for their own self-interests would rather see the majority of the people suffer. This decision for which the Police Commissioner should be hailed should serve as a precedent that local Feasts in the liberal democratic time to come will not hinder or create an obstacle to the free flow of traffic.Well done in the name of the People who have got fed up being governed by rogues hiding under some Patron Saint.
This medium provided by THE TIMES IS proving a very effective means of conveying the People`s stand on any issue - a REFERENDUM without the trappings of a Referendum. The people will equally not mind if no fireworks are let off - who cares, the majority of people do not want them anyway. This is the dawn of Liberal Democracy in Malta where Idiotic Circles will be left at liberty to go and play the trombone without however disturbing others!
