Government ready for talks, will not tolerate lawbreaking - Gonzi

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said today that the government was ready to hold talks on public transport as long as they were civilised, around a table, and without the sort of incidents witnessed over the past few days.

He also stressed that anybody who broke the law would have to bear the consequences. What had happened, he said, was detrimental to Malta's image, and hence detrimental to the transport operators themselves,

He said government policy was clear in favour of liberalisation but with sensitivity to ensure that operators moved forward and not backwards. (See video clip)

Thank goodness this Malta debacle hasn`t reached the British press. If it had, it would have been another nail in the coffin of Malta`s tourism. In a recent article in the London Times about the best mediterranean resorts, the map of the Med that was published didn`t even show Malta ! It`s as bad as that.

yes mr gonzi civilised talks but with honour.it is useless to make promises and then not keep them.this chaos all started because a letter sent by mr mugliett on your goverment behaves was not honoured.mr gatt stated that this letter was not sent by him but by another minister.this is an undeplorable conduct by a senior minister in your cabinet which infuriated a lot of people let alone the transport strikers.a statement or letter issued by any senior member with the backing of cabinet should be honoured and i am not only talking on this issue only.god forbid us if we are made to believe that man of honour dont exist anymore.

This speach sounds to be searching for reconciliation - in contrast with previous Government messages we had before. I just wonder how come we did not have the same kind of messgae before.. and we would have saved all this from happening.

Also, just a comment:- I condem violence. But If anyone lived abroad (example France) many strikes are vivid and colourful. Of course, if there was no passion, why would people strike?!
