Fire science, building standards and sustainability are the main focus of a technical collaboration agreement MSB Valletta has just signed with Building Research Establishment (BRE) Global.

Formally part of the UK government infrastructure, BRE Global operates under the BRE Trust, a research and educational charitable foundation, and is the UK's leading centre of excellence underpinning the development of building regulations, fire regulations and sustainability for the built environment.

MSB Valletta anticipates that this agreement, drawing on BRE's 85 years of continuous research-based advice to governments, will make a valuable contribution to supporting Maltese government institutions and the private sector in developing building regulations, fire regulations and environmental and sustainability guidelines to meet the requirements of rapid developments now taking place in Malta.

The agreement also opens possibilities for collaboration with educational and research bodies to undertake technical and scientific research relating to the field of fire science and the built environment.

This collaboration can deliver world class training and offer independent peer reviews of advanced fire engineered solutions for buildings.

To underpin best practice in fire safety, the agreement will also focus on promoting the BRE's Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) independent third-party product certification services.

Formed initially by the UK's Association of British Insurers, the LPCB has a history of risk reduction dating from the 1880s and is one of the world's leading approvals bodies specialising in fire and security systems and services.

MSB Valletta and BRE Global are committed to promoting the LPCB's independent third-party fire and security product certification to insurers, regulators, specifiers, property developers and fire and security products manufacturers and importers.

Commenting on the agreement, Matthew E. Joslin, MSB Valletta's chief executive officer, said: "Combined with the company's risk management and fire engineering talent, the services that MSB Valletta will be able to offer through the technical collaboration of BRE Global will be of huge benefit to insurers, regulators, authorities, Government, investors, service providers and consultants.

In addition, together with BRE Global, MSB Valletta will be promoting BREEAM International, the BRE Environment Assessment Method, the world's leading and most widely used environment assessment method for buildings. Over 100,000 buildings have been assessed and over half a million have been registered.

Mr Joslin visited BRE Global's research facilities in Watford, UK, earlier this year. There he met BRE Global regional director Victor Bragg and technical director Philip Field. He also saw the impressive R&D and test facilities on a 73-acre site, one of the largest test facilities in Europe.

Mr Bragg, who was in Malta last month to sign the agreement and met various officials.
