At least 16 passengers missed flights after being held up in traffic because of the transport strike this morning, informed sources said.

The congestion was caused mostly in Marsa and on roundabouts near the airport, with passengers forced to walk with their luggage for quite some distance (picture).

Private vehicles are providing a shuttle service from near the airport, and informed sources at the airport said transport had even been provided by private cars driven by taxi drivers.

Parliamentary Secretary Mario de Marco and senior officials from the Malta Tourism Authority and the Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association, among others, are at the airport for a second day to coordinate action.

Meanwhile, the Federated Association of Travel and Tourism Agents (FATTA) has filed a judicial protest against the Transport Federation calling on it to stop the current public transport strike and holding it responsible for damages.
