Austria's conservatives will narrowly defeat the centre-left Social Democrats in a snap election set for September 28, while support for the rightist Freedom Party is likely to surge by some 60 per cent, the latest polls show. The conservative People's Party, which scrapped a coalition with Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer's Social Democrats on July 7, would finish slightly below their result in the 2006 election while the environmentalist Greens stand to gain.

Ruling parties: Social Democrat Party (SPOe) - centre-left, labour-oriented; People's Party (OeVP) - conservative, Christian-oriented.

Opposition parties: Greens - environmentalist; Freedom Party (FPOe) - far right; Alliance for Austria's Future (BZOe) - populist right.
