The conservative People's Party, which scrapped a coalition with Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer's Social Democrats on July 7, would finish slightly below their result in the 2006 election while the environmentalist Greens stand to gain.
Ruling parties: Social Democrat Party (SPOe) - centre-left, labour-oriented; People's Party (OeVP) - conservative, Christian-oriented.
Opposition parties: Greens - environmentalist; Freedom Party (FPOe) - far right; Alliance for Austria's Future (BZOe) - populist right.
