Social Policy Minister John Dalli is inviting applications for appointment to the council that regulates voluntary organisations and their administration.
The council will be composed of a chairman and 10 members.

Five members from the voluntary sector will be appointed as follows: three will be nominated by voluntary organisations enrolled at the date of publication of the notice; one by voluntary organisations that are not enrolled in terms of the law governing the sector but are registered in terms of the Second Schedule to the Civil Code and one by voluntary organisations that are neither enrolled in terms of the law nor registered in terms of the Second Schedule to the Civil Code.
The other four members will be appointed as follows: one representing founders of and donors to voluntary organisations; a representative of members of voluntary organisations and volunteers; one to represent administrators of voluntary organisations and one member to represent foreign and international organisations.
Provided that there is more than one nomination representing a particular sector, the minister will appoint such members from among the nominations received and where no nominations are received the minister shall appoint such members at his discretion.
There are certain restrictions as to who can be nominated.
Nominations will be received by the Commission For Voluntary Organisations by August 18.
Mepa e-applications
Mepa yesterday gave NGOs and local councils free, unlimited access to digital plans for all planning applications through its e-applications systems. The authority is inviting NGOs that have not received notification of the service to contact it on 2290 2014 or send an e-mail to ruth.micallef@mepa.org.mt and submit their request.
E-applications, launched earlier this year, is more than just a technological tool, Mepa said. The system brings together different platforms and technologies into one homogeneous system that allows clients to view application details, submit and pay for applications online and send/receive correspondence digitally thus increasing participation, efficiency and transparency.
Palm fronds
In order to control the spread of the red palm weevil pest, palm fronds to be used by fishermen for the lampuki season should be collected from a common site where the cutting of fronds is controlled.
In Malta, palm fronds should only be collected from Wied Inċita, while in Gozo they should only be collected from the Afforestation Section at an approved site after interested persons present a receipt issued by the Fisheries Section in Gozo.
For further information contact the Plant Health Department within the Ministry for Resources and Rural Affairs on 2339 7100.

Toys with magnets
European Commission Directive 2008/329/KE dealing with the magnetic element in children's toys will come into force on Monday, the Ministry of Finance, the Economy and Investment said.
The directive puts an obligation on producers, distributors, importers and retailers to place a warning on magnetic toys saying that "magnets sticking together or becoming attached to a metallic object inside the human body can cause serious or fatal injury" and urging immediate medical help if magnets are swallowed or inhaled.
The ministry said toys may be withdrawn from the market if such a warning is not displayed.
