Priceless maps in return for Valletta house

Parliament yesterday unanimously approved a motion authorising the transfer of a house in Valletta, valued at €1,747,030 (Lm750,000), in return for a priceless collection of rare maps of Malta belonging Dr Albert Ganado, the market value of which is estimated at €1,769,325.96 (Lm759,571.63).

The unique collection contains hand painted as well as printed maps of Malta which Dr Ganado had put together out of his own pocket and researched during the past 50 years. The maps, 450 in all, date back to between 1507 and 1899. A number of related books and publications are also included.

Dr Ganado, a lawyer and a scholar, is an authority on maps and has published a number of studies in which items from his collection feature prominently.

Experts consider this transfer as one of the biggest ever acquisitions made by the government.

It is great to see something like this happening and our heritage being preserved...... but I can't help smiling at the fact that soemthing "priceless" actually does have a "market value"!
