Comparing the high spend on health and education, which the government boasts of, with the results achieved in the sectors confirms the incompetence and waste that characterise the Nationalist leadership over the last years, the Labour Party's spokesman on finance, Charles Mangion, said.

The situation was causing the government to backtrack from its promises, he added, accusing the government of contradicting the EU's official statistics.

The more Finance Minister Tonio Fenech boasts that Malta was one of the least taxed countries, the more clear it becomes how the government never tires of deceiving the Maltese, he said. The fact is that official EU statistics show Malta is one of the countries where the burden of taxes increased the most over the last decade.

A study by the European Commission on taxes in member states concludes that Malta can no longer be considered the least-taxed country, he said.

The burden of the great debt that the government has pleased on the country's shoulders is making it almost impossible to protect Maltese families from the negative impact caused by the increase in international prices, Dr Mangion said.
