It is unbelievable that rent reform should interfere with with the marital status of the tenant, children and their ages, cohabitation, single parents and same-sex couples, and untold other things.
Surely renting a property today is considered a business transaction based on supply and demand. As members of the EU, I am sure that whatever legislation is eventually passed in Parliament it will be challenged under one auspice or another, be it privacy, human rights, sex rights or business etiquette.
The only fair option is to have the building valued by a trio of architects, and the rent be set with effect January 1, 2009, as to what the value of the building will have risen to. Once set, the rent will be increased every three years by sum of the cost of living index rise over the last three years.
It is agonising that as a part-owner of property inherited since a parent passed away, some of the rents are derisory.
