A 24-year-old Libyan national was yesterday given a suspended jail term after he pleaded guilty to illegally importing 20,000 cigarettes that were hidden in the box of a satellite dish.

Magistrate Edwina Grima heard Mohamed Ibrahim Hsuna Sultan admit to illegally importing the Capital and Rothmans cigarettes and having €15,000 in cash, €5,000 over the legal limit.

The court heard that the cigarettes are worth €295.80 while VAT, excise duty and importation tax amounts to €1,572.74.

After taking into consideration Mr Sultan's early admission, the court pronounced a 13-month jail term suspended for one year and a €8,477.41 fine. She also ordered the confiscation of the cash found in his possession.
