Oħloq Tbissima, a 60-hour live broadcasting marathon to raise awareness of missionary work and collect funds for the projects of the Missionary Society of St Paul (MSSP), was launched yesterday by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, Gozo Bishop Mario Grech and Labour leader Joseph Muscat.

The marathon, held annually, is organised by the Ċentru Animazzjoni Missjunarja (CAM) Productions International within the MSSP.

It is a marathon jam packed with entertainment for the family, including singing and dancing, games, prayer, activities for children, talent and food and drink.

The marathon was opened by Morena and will include the participation tomorrow of tenor Joseph Calleja.

Locally, funds collected will be used for St Joseph Home in Sta Venera, where the marathon is being held. This is a home caring for 18 seven to 18-year-old boys and for evangelisation through the media.

In Peru, funds collected will support various projects including work being carried out in schools, an orphanage, Aldea Sagrada Familia, a clinic in Primero di Junio and the building of small houses for poor families.

They will also be used for food programmes giving the poor in the area at least one free healthy meal daily and secondary education in Fra Ġużepp Caruana College.

In Pakistan, funds will help continue the useful work carried out by MSSP priests in three schools where about 1,000 students get their education. The funds being sent to the Philippines will be in aid of various food programmes in schools where it is ensured that children get one healthy meal daily.

Launching the marathon, Fr Louis Mallia, regional superior of the MSSP and director of CAM, described it as an experience of joy that united the Maltese to their brethren in need, in Malta and abroad.

Besides visiting and taking part in the marathon, one can also follow-on television. It is being broadcast live on Melita Cable Channel 30 and Education 22 with various links on Net TV, One TV and TVM.

By 3 p.m. yesterday €10,967 had been collected. One can donate by calling 5004 9853 (€7); 5004 9855 (€12); 5004 9850 (€23) or by sending an SMS on 5061 8099 (€4.66).
