EU27 citizens made 438 million trips of four nights or more in 2006.
Of the total number of trips made, 61 per cent were domestic and 39 per cent outbound, according to Eurostat.
Among the member states for which the data is available, there was a preference for domestic trips in 12 member states and outbound in 12.
Over three quarters of trips made in Greece (89 per cent), Romania (88 per cent), Spain (86 per cent), France (83 per cent), Poland (81 per cent), Portugal (79 per cent) and Italy (75 per cent) were domestic trips.
On the other hand, over 70 per cent of all trips were outbound trips in Luxembourg (99 per cent), Belgium (81 per cent), Ireland (77 per cent) and Slovenia (72 per cent).
