Disabled man in Gozo-Malta charity swim this month
Stephen Attard, an active member of LAND (Living Ability Not Disability), is all set for this year's swimming challenge later on this month from Gozo to Malta.
Mr Attard suffered extensive head injuries in a traffic accident that happened 23 years ago, which left him with physical disabilities.
However, with the support of his family he has managed to exchange his wheelchair for a walking stick. He is bent on challenging people's misconception that "disabled" people cannot do what "normal" people can do.
Mr Attard finds his strength in the sea and this is where he wants to overcome his next challenge. His friends and professional swimmer Nikki Farrugia are going to accompany him during the crossing in their boats on a voluntary basis.
LAND was established in 2002 and it caters for persons with physical disabilities. Its aims are independence and inclusion through socialising into mainstream society. Transport costs for activities amount to €10,000 annually, since most of LAND's members are wheelchair users.
Contributions can be made on sms 5061 8085 for €4.66; 5061 8938 for €6.99; and 5061 9229 for €11.65.
