Forget the weather forecast - if you want to inject a taste of summer into your wardrobe, it's anchors away for the nautical trend. The nautical look reminds you of the seaside and immediately puts you in that holiday mood. It's a trend that's very wearable and fresh for summer.

Nautical may not have rocked the boat on the spring/summer catwalks but that doesn't mean to say fashionistas should give the trend a wide berth.

It's nice to have a trend around that's not too fashion-led. You don't feel like you're making a massive statement when you're wearing it - it's more of a timeless style for summer.

Hit the nautical deck and you'll be sailing ahead of the faddy fashion pack this season.

Nautical must-haves

If your budget is more dinghy than jet-set, you don't have to splash out on pricey new pieces to achieve nautical perfection. Riviera style is easily put together by re-working a few wardrobe favourites.

A stripy boat-neck long sleeve top is a good essential to look very cool and French. White jeans are also really big this summer.

High-waisted trousers are another way to update your wardrobe this season with a nautical edge. Pair them with a little vest top for that fresh Riviera look.

The nautical silhouette is sharp and slim, but never tight fitting. Key pieces include polo shirts, blazers, nautical knitwear, shorts and slim slacks.

And the good news if you do splash out on seaside chic? Nautical fashion is set to be big next year too, with lots of wide, high-waisted tailoring, and a return of the big-shouldered blazer.

Sea-bound prints

It's anchors, rope details and stripes ahoy this summer in terms of nautical detailing. But you don't have to go overboard on fussy seaside prints. Keep it simple with contrasting colour combinations such as whites with navy, black, or red.

Polka dots, gingham checks and oversized geometric prints can all be worked into the nautical look, but stripes are undoubtedly the hottest way to flaunt Riviera regalia.

Anchor accessories

To look shipshape in nautical fashions, don't lose your sailor girl stripes by overloading on accessories. Nautical look is a pretty clean look, so apart from belts or bags, keep it quite minimal on the accessory front.

Look for ropey style accessories like rope-handled bags and belts, or canvas, cork, or wicker heels or wedges. If you're wearing the nautical trend, anything too heavy can ruin the look so opt for natural materials.
