The hamlet of Santa Luċija in Kerċem has been selected as one of the European Destinations of Excellence through a project co-financed by the European Commission.

Lija, Qormi and Żejtun share second place and Nadur third.

In the award ceremony, the Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, Mario de Marco said the project rewards localities that succeed in promoting intangible heritage and is aimed at attracting tourists interested in history and culture.

The project encourages local councils to attract visitors to less popular zones and helps improve tourism to the southern and Mediterranean regions of Europe.

Twenty-one councils participated in the programme and were judged on seasonality, accessibility, quality, sustainability, diversity, authenticity and innovation.
