The executive committee of the Malta Dockers' Union yesterday filed a libel suit against the Labour Party weekly newspaper KullĦadd over an article which they claim tarnished their reputation.

The union filed the libel suit against KullĦadd editor Felix Agius. It complained that the article entitled Ikompli Jberraq Għal Ħaddiema Tax-Xatt (More trouble ahead for dock workers) was libellous.

The union said that the article, published on June 29, reported that the trucks used to transport containers are owned by Malta Freeport and are driven by yard workers. The article claimed that there is a secret plan for a possible take over of this service by a private company. The article also said that dockyard workers are involved in the plan together with a prominent contractor on the island who gets a lot of contracts from the government involving work at the Freeport.

Lawyer Ian Stafrace signed the suit.
