I recently stayed with my Dutch friends at a lovely home in Mellieħa Heights. I enjoyed my stay and I enjoyed the hospitality of my friends as well as the Maltese in general.

I love walking and I walked a lot around the area where my friends live. I was very dismayed at what I saw in such a beautiful area. There are some very nice open areas which would make pretty parks for the locals to meet in and relax.

A lovely one is in Spratt Square but unfortunately it has been allowed to get into a very bad state. Other open areas are covered in uncontrolled weeds. Just clearing these weeds and maybe putting in some grass and a couple of trees and benches would enhance them.

I saw a lovely one in Żabbar which would look nice in Mellieħa, not expensive to do and keep either. One beautiful open area is called (I was told) Wesgħa Narċis. This is pitifully poor and at one end it houses some very heavy building equipment. Why? Nobody could tell me.

There are some beautiful houses round this square and I truly felt sorry for these people. I was told that this area becomes very busy with tourists. Please do not let them go home with a bad impression of this lovely town.

Look after it and make it beautiful for yourselves and your visitors.

I do not know whether the local council or the national government is responsible, but whoever it is, please have a good look around and make Mellieħa Heights what the name denotes.
