Disappointing decision on Fort Cambridge (2)

The road to hell is paved with good intentions! Whatever was the new chairman of Mepa thinking in instructing the preparation of two diverse press releases, before the public hearing of the Fort Cambridge project, one announcing the approval and one (albeit never seen) reporting the refusal? It has been reported that the intention was to somehow out-gun the NGOs and avoid twisted reporting - talk of shooting oneself in the foot!

One should however be prepared to give the gentleman the benefit of the doubt, as nobody could possibly be so naïve as to believe that he could get away with releasing a hand-out announcing the approval of a permit before the actual determination. He, on the other hand, should be very concerned that his PRO, whose primary role is surely to ensure that the tarnished image of Mepa does not suffer further public abuse, failed to advise his inexperienced chairman against such a practice of anticipated press releases, and failed to ensure that such document does not become available to attentive reporters.

In the meantime, while accusations and insinuations fly from every corner, we long-suffering stakeholders are eagerly waiting for some serious signs of the reform which the Prime Minister has been promising us - I, for one, am not holding my breath!

And should we think that the new MEPA chairman had just fallen from the clouds to take up his post - and, therefore, totally ignorant of the general feeling harboured by the Maltese public in the Authority's regard? Come off it, and do not blame petty officials for the 'sins' of their fathers!
