The coordinator of the Mediterranean Action Plan (MAP), Paul Mifsud, has been invited by French President Nicolas Sarkozy to attend a summit in Paris on Sunday launching the Barcelona Process: Union For The Mediterranean.
MAP, the UN's Environment Programme (UNEP) Regional Seas Programme For The Mediterranean (UNEP/MAP), will be represented at the summit.
The summit is based on a proposal adopted by the European Commission in May to enhance the partnership between the EU and its Mediterranean neighbours.
It will bring together heads of state and government from the 27 EU member states and the states that are members and observers of the Barcelona Process, together with Jordan, Mauritania and the Palestinian Authority.
These parties to the Barcelona Convention and its protocols, including Malta, have pledged to meet the challenges of protecting the marine and coastal environment while boosting regional and national plans to achieve sustainable development.
