Court annulments of marriages
Between 2001 and up to June 30, the Magistrates' courts in Malta decided on 1,158 requests for annulment of marriage, while those in Gozo decided on 27.
Answering a parliamentary question by Anthony Agius Decelis (MLP), Justice Minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici said the figures did not show how many requests had been accepted. That information could be accessed from the Public Registry.

Annulment means you were had before the act. While divorce is the state when both agree that they don’t agree after the fact. Mind you one can save maintenance money if a decree of nullity is established.
In the mean time we will soon abolish the meaning of morality from our dictionaries. Since it has been unfashionable for ages!

For one thing, divorce at least acknowledges that you were married to someone. An annulment is a bury-under-the-carpet solution for the church and government to accept what's happening in real life out there. Declaring legally that you were never married in the first place is incomprehensible to me, and even worse than divorce as a solution. It's basically saying that the years you spent with that person never really happened, they were just a figment of your imagination.
