During last year there were a total of 18 transplant operations: seven kidney, 10 cornea and one heart. All donors were Maltese and no organs were imported.

There are currently 80 patients on the waiting list for kidney transplants, three for heart transplants and 25 for cornea transplants.

The information was given by Social Policy Minister John Dalli in reply to a parliamentary question by Anthony Agius Decelis (MLP).

Answering another question by Mr Agius Decelis, Mr Dalli said that also during last year there were a total of 13,518 bags of blood distributed to public and private hospitals in Malta and Gozo. The number of donations in the same year amounted to 14,125. There was never any need to import blood.
