The artist on the roof

Sicilian artist Salvatore Montanucci has just launched his summer art school from the rooftop terrace of his Mosta studio.

Following last year's treat of a week-long art course in Sicily, his pupils are again in for a truly inspiring experience with the teacher's interactive approach to learning.

The first class looked out onto an archetypal Mediterranean landscape that formed the first of many outdoor art lessons to be held around Malta. Pupils learn how to paint in the landscape form with oil on canvas and Mr Montanucci believes that preparation is key.

"It is vital to take the time to study your subject in detail, to gain an appreciation and understanding before sketching or painting in order to produce your best work," he said.

He also insists that, although he can teach technique, he can only motivate his pupils to feel passionate about the subject of their painting, something which has been essential in his own success. Indeed, his passion for art that "makes people smile" is evident in his vibrant exhibitions featured in countries such as Italy, Malta, Spain, Germany and the United States, inspired by legends, myths, fairytales, humankind and nature.

Mr Montanucci believes that the fast pace of modern life means that we no longer have chance to appreciate the earth's gifts and his class is designed to encourage people to take the time to enjoy their natural surroundings. This is exactly what hobby artist Ray Axiaq from Żurrieq decided to do, finding the classes "therapeutic".

Following a visit to Il-Bottegin ta' San Martin exhibition in Valletta, wood and stone carver Doreen Gatt from Santa Venera was so inspired by his work that she couldn't pass up the opportunity to participate in the rooftop art class.

Born in Catania, Sicily, Mr Montanucci began to paint professionally in 1986, obtaining a diploma from the Istituto d'Arte FIDIA di Agrigento in 1990. His work is on display at Il-Bottegin ta' San Martin exhibition, Old Bakery Street, Valletta.
