Libyan boat skipper accused of people trafficking

A Libyan national, Abdul Salem Mohamed Ab Xlifa Selwa, 30, was arraigned in court this morning and accused of people trafficking.

He pleaded not guilty and was remanded in custody.

The man was arraigned after his boat was escorted to Malta early yesterday.

Five Egyptians who were also on the boat admitted coming to Malta without passports and permits and were each jailed for a month.

The Libyan, who was the skipper of the boat, had jumped into the sea as a patrol boat approached but was picked up by the AFM sailors.

The Egyptians have no right to asylum or humanitarian status. They should be repatriated forthwith.
