Micallef joins Spartans on three-year contract

Ħamrun Spartans completed their third signing of the transfer season yesterday after they snapped up the services of versatile midfielder Manolito Micallef from Premier League rivals Floriana.

Micallef, 24, scored five goals in the Premier League last season. However, at the end of the campaign, the Greens gave the nod for Micallef to seek pastures new and he opted to join the Spartans with whom he signed for three years.

The signing comes hot on the heels of two earlier captures by the Spartans after they moved in for Serb midfielder Zoran Levniac, also ex-Floriana, and Brazilian forward Ronaldo Paulista.

Sources close to the club yesterday told The Sunday Times that the Spartans are also closing in on central defender Brian Said, of Sliema Wanderers. It seems, there is agreement with the Wanderers. Personal terms are being discussed with the player who is also being courted by Marsaxlokk.

Micallef, Levniac and Paulista will join their new team-mates on Tuesday when coach Marco Gerada will conduct the first session of the Spartans' pre-season training at the Luxol Ground.

Meanwhile, Division One side St George's yesterday announced the appointment of Joey Falzon as the new coach.
