Keith Galea and Danica Spiteri continued to spearhead the overall classification in the Birkirkara SJ open water series, by notching up their second victory in as many races.

Halfway through the two-kilometre race, Galea swam off course by a considerable distance, pulling with him the swimmers at his heels.

This resulted in the pursuing group in the race making up for lost ground, rendering the competition very tight.

However, Galea went on to shake off the shadowing of Simon Zammit and Nicky Farrugia, to win comfortably in 29.46. Zammit was second, 30.36, and Farrugia third, 31.03.

With 2007 champion Isabelle Zarb way off form, Spiteri is the women's series runaway leader.

In this second race she swam the distance in 31.10. Michelle Wood and Johanna Calleja finished second and third respectively.

The next race in the series will be held on Wednesday.
