Science activities at San Andrea School

San Andrea School, L-Imselliet, organised a number of extra curricular science activities this year. The school's Science department launched a new Science club which met every Wednesday during second break and was open to all Grade 9 and 10 students. Its members took part in hands-on experiments which helped them understand various scientific concepts and have fun at the same time.

In March, a group of Grade 11 students went on an exchange trip to La Roch Sur Yon in France where they presented a project in a science exhibition entitled 'Bio-prospecting' which involved the extraction of compounds from plants and animals for medicinal use.

This year's Stephen Hawking Science and Technology project was entitled 'The What, the How and the Why' of various things around us. The Grade 11 students prepared a short assignment and a 15-minute presentation. At the final of short-listed presentations held on May 22, a panel of judges chose Ryan and John Cascun's project, entitled 'The Egg'.

The Science Soirée held on May 13 involved all Senior School students. It included among others, a section entitled 'The Science Hall of Fame' where each student prepared a chart about a particular scientist and his invention to present to the visitors of the soirée, an exhibition about the Universe and a presentation on the life of the scientist Stephen Hawking.

There were also hands-on experiments, an exhibition about alternative energy and a show related to the heart.

Students from various grades demonstrated the use of various computer programs and displayed their technical design drawings and models. There was also sections featuring the Energy Terrace, which is entirely dedicated to energy and alternative sources of energy, and an open, yet fully functional computer.
