MEPA keeps up with new cases in June, just

The Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) last month determined slightly more development applications than the number it received.

The Authority said it decided 543 applications and received 533 new applications. The net pending caseload at the end of the month was 4,894.

During June the Authority processed 127 notifications of development, which do not require a formal application.

During the same month, 88 Stop and Enforcement notices were issued, 63 in Malta and 25 in Gozo; 38 enforcement cases were closed, 23 in Malta and 15 in Gozo. 27 enforcement cases were sanctioned by the issue of a sanctionable permit. Another 10 cases were resolved since owners decided to remove illegal development and comply with enforcement notice.

During the same month 1 case was withdrawn by MEPA.

Just keeping your head above water for one month doesn't mean you're not drowning! It's simple: either the workers are too slow or they have too much work to achieve whatever standards of timeliness they might have (what are they?). If the latter is the case than Government needs to decide whether this is acceptable public service or if not increase staffing appropriately and make the applicants pay, perhaps.

Nice to know. But the foremost issue concerns the way decisions are being taken, in the light of yesterday's report that:

Approval (of a qui si sana project) was given at a turbulent board meeting which kicked off on the wrong note when reporters discovered a press release announcing the approval even before the meeting had started.

This issue becomes even more pressing considering that it is Mr Prime Minister himself who is now responsible for Mepa.

Explanations for yesterday's incident are required
